Volunteer Spotlight!

Ila Yonker

Ila Yonker has faithfully volunteered for Evergreen’s Adult Day Health and Prime Time programs since January, 2005.  Ila enjoys music, chime choir and getting to know the participants by hearing their stories.  She also started and continues to lead a book club within the Prime Time program.

Growing up in Holland, Ila attended high school in this building (Evergreen Commons) when it was Holland Christian High School.  Ila and her late husband have five children, the oldest of whom was born deaf.  Ila tutored her son through school, encouraging him, in her patient and caring way, to use his voice rather than sign language.

Ila would tell anyone interested in volunteering at Evergreen, in any department, that they would experience a sense of fulfillment when they share their time and talent.   Ila is very enthusiastic about Evergreen and tells everyone about her experiences at the center which she describes as “putting joy in my heart every time I am here!”
